Artcar Nation was back at Jeff Davis High School last week to check on the progress of the Earth Wind and Fire car. We timed our visit with the arrival of Isaac Cohen and the completed fire effect he constructed for the project.

When we arrived Ms. Bass and her students were pushing the car out from under the canopy it lives under.  "It was such a nice day today so we thought we would pull it out so everyone could get a good look at it." Ms. Bass said. "It's also getting pretty cramped in there" she continued.

Also on hand were Joe Haden and Randy Blair. Randy had bags full of goodies that to donate to the project. "I think it's great what these kids are doing. And the car looks great." If there's one thing Randy Blair knows it's how to bling out a car.

Isaac arrived and set up the flame thrower, which runs through the phoenix centerpiece of the car.  There was much oohing and aahing from the students when he demonstrated the flame thrower.

While there I also met Laura Brickey, a marketing executive for Vitamin Water. Her company has donated a significant amount of money to the project. "The school didn't have any money for the project so I had to go elsewhere for funding" Ms. Bass said. "Sometimes the powers that be need to be convinced" I consoled. "Once this thing is up and running, they'll come around" I continued. "They'll come around to take credit" Laura interjected.

During my time observing the students work it was often hard to see the car for all the worker bees crawling around working tirelessly making art. Ms. Bass' art students were gluing beads here and sculpting guitars there. Paloma Garner's robotics students were installing motors and testing gears. The successful smoke machine test provided a lot of excitement. "It's turning out really beautiful" said Ms. Bass.
